What a Week!

This week was incredibly busy. On top of teaching everyday, I had a Habitat for Humanity meeting Tuesday night until 10 p.m. and a cocktail party Thursday. I was nine kids of exhausted last night, but I still went out. It's fine though because there is nothing to do today; it is a holiday so everything is closed.

Speaking of Habitat for Humanity, does anyone have any good fund raising ideas? We are going to have a gala dinner, but we need other ways to make money. This year, the Paris division of Habitat is going to Romania and we need something like 500-600 euros per person.

I am busy planning my trip home. I can't wait! I will be home for a whole three weeks and I will have so much to do. On the top of my list is a huge shoe shopping trip. I love shoes in Paris; they are beautiful, but my feet are too big for them. I went shopping for 4 hours last weekend and I couldn't find anything. Last year, I wanted shoes, this year I NEED shoes. Other than that, I am just looking forward to visiting with everyone.

Shoe shopping is among the top items on my list of things to do when I get home. Since my husband's favorite shoes were also stolen in Belgium we're just going to knock ourselves out with shoes in the U.S. My main problems with shoes here are 1) the price and 2) the fact that I just don't want to do pointy toes, no matter how cute they are. Plus I need some things that are not heels since my belly is growing and my center of gravity has apparently changed.

Sorry, I don't have any good fund-raising ideas for you. My fund-raising experiences have been strictly limited to chocolate bars for band and girl scout cookies. That's cool that you're involved in that, though.

are french people's feet smaller? i'd be out of luck with my big ol' feet.

Pardon-I know. How in the world do they justify charging that much for uncomfortable shoes?! I hate the pointy toe too.

Hellomelissa-I wear a 10 and can sometimes find shoes that fit, but they are a tight fit.

ooooohhhh, T.J. Maxx maybe...not as fun as a Paris shoe salon....

The thrill of the search.

I remember you talking about having large feet like me. Busy is always good... Yes we forgot some places were closed today, but nothing big like in Europe.

I guess fund raising ideas such as car wash, ticket raffle, candy/bake sale would be out of the question? Those are the only things I can think of!

A trip back to the States? How exciting! This is the time of year I would love to be back home too.

Cityfarmer-It would be more thrilling if I thought I would actually get to purchase any!

Expat-How did you find shoes?

Deb-I think we will have an auction at our gala dinner, but we need to make money on a large scale, so bake sales are out. I love doing them, though. As far as a car wash goes, well I doubt we could do it in Paris.

Does this mean you'll be home for Christmas? If yes, YEAH!! It's good to be home for the holidays.

For fundraisers, two possibilities are screening a movie (renting a theatre and a movie and having a special showing) or hiring a speaker (I'm guessing they have speaker's bureaus in France too) and selling tickets. See if Bono does speaking engagements. (Kind of kidding. But I'll bet there are other musicians/former musicians who are active in social causes who do speaking engagements.)

Angela, are you coming home for Christmas? I'll bet you're excited, I'm so happy for you!

Speaking of shoes, the worst place for expats to go shoe shopping is in the Far East because they (the shoes) are always so darn small. I'm an average size 8 but I had such a problem finding shoes to fit me in Hongkong, Singapore and Thailand. But that was a decade ago, maybe things have changed since then.

how did I find shoes? Found some in Basel by luck and another pair of semi ugly boots that were too small but size 10. I got used to them but they hurt a ton since I'm size 11.

Also I know this might be hard, but sometimes you can search in mens... That's how I found shoes when I was so desperate, and I was at one time because I had planter fascitis and it sucked!

Thanks everyone for the great ideas for fund raising. Everything bit helps.

Expat-tried men's shoes...nothing yet, but I will keep trying. Thanks!

Lotus-I'll keep that in mind! I would like to visit those places, but definitely not for shoes.
